Visco Elastic Memory Foam Mattresses

Developed by NASA about 30 years ago - the buzzword in the bedding world today is viscoelastic, also known as memory foam.

What gives the memory foam it’s “memory” is the polyurethane from which it’s made. It has a different structure from other foams, which makes it less ‘spongy’ and slower to recover. It remembers your body shape for a few minutes after you have moved away.

Thickness Options:

When buying a memory bed, you have many options: there are several thickness levels available. You can find 6,8,10,12 Inches of thickness. It's important to test your bed as thinker is not necessarily better, it's a personal choice. The density of the foam has to be right. If the density is less than 5 pounds you’ll find yourself sinking more and you will also be very sweaty as the mattress will envelop you too much. The thicker the foam the more you sink in and the harder it can make it to move around at night, this can be an issue the heavier you are. If you are weak, you may find have some problem moving once the bed has formed to your shape.

Choosing a bed:

Testing is key, however you’ll find that a lot of brands are only sold online. What you want to have there is a solid return policy. If the online store values their customers they will have a minimum 60 day money back guarantee where you pay for return freight or an admin fee.

Please note that some foams can take up to 15 minutes to warm up and soften, this is when you can fully experience the feel of the bed. So it's important to do this and make sure you get the right bed for you. Not all memory foams are the same, it's best to try differents brands and models.  A quality mattress should have some form of edge guard, this will encase the mattress on all sides. This benefits in two ways. First it gives you a larger area of usable space to sleep on and gives the bed more support when you happen to be sitting on the edge of it.

There are several well known and not so well known brands available.

Sealy Serta, Bragada, Tempur-pedic, Ergosoft, Ergoflex, Wenatex, Essentia, Novaform, Koolflow and many more.

Essentia mattresses are not made with petroleum based chemicals like other foams, they’re made using natural latex rubber, essential oils, water and plant extracts. They do not contain any petroleum. Their foam and mattress is healthy to sleep on, breathable and eco-friendly.

is your mattress healthy? You should be aware of the quantity of toxic glues and chemical foams in everyday mattresses. These products emit fumes which we breathe in night after night. If you are health conscious or allergy sufferer, Essentia is the healthy alternative for you.
Although this mattress is 100% natural, you have to take into account that it’s not based on the same technology of the synthetic memory foam and will not give you the same effect.

Essentia is a top growing Canadian mattress company and they offer a 20 year limited warranty with all their mattresses and free shipping across Canada.

Cover:  I would recommend getting a cover which ever mattress you decide on. This will keep your mattress looking good for longer. Something organic made from a combination of cotton and wool would be my preference. Wool is naturally fire retardant and dust mite resistant. Something that has a thread count of 300 or more will help isolate any fumes coming from the mattress.

Advantages: Best type of mattress for pain relief during sleep and through the day. This type of mattress is very durable.

Disadvantages: Can be hot for some people. Some users find the smell too much at first, this will subside over time. This is a man made synthetic mattress that has chemicals in its makeup and has to be chemically treated with flame retardant chemicals.
